The Real Black Beauty - Why Black Women Are Beautiful
This October, I went to Las Vegas to celebrate a friend’s 30th birthday. This was not my first time in the sin city. One of the activities on the agenda was a Drag Brunch at Señor Frogs. If you’ve ever been to a drag show you know that the queens love to pull the birthday girls and brides on stage to participate in the show.
While my friend was on stage they asked her name and she responded. The Queen then asked her what she was mixed with, because she was beautiful and looked mixed. Her response was “I’m just black”. All of her friends, myself included, went crazy! We stood up and cheered her on because that one statement meant a lot to us being Black women. The crowd was so confused. The host made a joke about us being the black girl magic club or something to that effect. The queen then said “well I am just white.” Nobody took it offensively because it was a drag show and they often make light of different situations.
That moment stuck with me and I often think about it. I find it exhausting that we as black women have to defend ourselves and prove our beauty to the world. Why is that we have to be mixed to be perceived as beautiful, when blackness is inherently beautiful?
“ The most disrespected woman in America, is the Black Woman. The most un-protected person in America is the Black Woman. The most neglected person in America, is the Black Woman. “ - Malcolm X
For years, Black women have held down families, influenced politics, created fashion, beauty and hair trends that have been recycled by women of other cultures. Black women are some of the pioneers of popular trends today. We have used our strength to create milestones and still maintain our poise even when our contributions are often over looked.
Black women are versatile and limitless. There are so many characteristics that set us apart from our melanin, to our full lips, our bodies, and our style. I’m not sure who needed to hear this today but sis, you are beautiful! The world may over look us but we are undeniably beautiful and never forget it.
