Holiday Movies: My FavESS

The holiday season is among us, this is one of my favorite times of the year. Some of the movies that bring me joy are about the holidays and family. My mother jump-started my love for movies. Every weekend, we would go to the movies, stop by Blockbuster, or VisArt (local Chapel Hill movie rental place) and pick out movies for the weekend. She exposed me to the classics early, but also let me find my own passion for movies as well. So, here’s a list of my favorite holiday movies with common themes focusing on love, family, and keeping the holiday spirit alive.

1. The Preacher’s Wife (1996)

With Christmas approaching, Rev. Biggs prays to God for help with his family and his struggling church. The angel, Dudley, is sent by God to help. This movie brings joy to the world and will forever be a classic! When I first saw it in theaters I thought I could sing like Whitney Houston and shouted out “I believe in miracles” in the bathroom. Everyone heard me, how embarrassing!

2. Miracle on 34th Street (1994)

The classic is great too, but I love the 1994 remake more! The age old question still stands, “Is Santa Claus real?”. A lawyer and a little girl fight to prove that Santa Claus is the real thing. If you don’t believe Santa is a real person, this movie will at least help keep the spirit of Christmas alive.

3. Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

If there’s anybody who knows how to celebrate Christmas it’s the people of Whoville. The Grinch is always working to rain on their parade by pulling practical jokes on them. Cindy Lou, helps the Grinch find the spirit of Christmas and shows the Whos that the holiday isn’t just about the presents.

4. A Diva’s Christmas Carol (2000)

Tis the season to be nasty! This VH1 movie is iconic. It’s a Diva spin on the traditional Scrooge story. Ebony Williams is one of the world's most successful pop singers. She has a cold-hearted soul and a nasty attitude. She is visited by three spirits: Ghost of Christmas Past, Ghost of Christmas Present, and Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come. They help Ebony find her holiday cheer.

5. Jack Frost (1998)

Jack Frost

A dad who never keeps up with his obligation is killed in a car accident. One year later, he returns reincarnated as a snowman. He bonds with his son and has the final chance to make things right before he is gone forever. One of the songs on the sound track, “Landslide” by The Dixie Chicks and Sheryl Crow gets me every time.

6. Holiday Heart (2000)

Holiday Heart is not focused specifically on the holidays. However, if you remember one of the most iconic scenes where Wanda has “the bike”, you can see Christmas is used as a time period and setting throughout the film. You can also see the unconventional and loving family aspect. Plus, who doesn’t love Holiday?

7. Sleepless in Seattle (1993)

Some might say that Sleepless in Seattle isn’t a holiday movie, but I disagree. It's a romance about two people finding each other at the top of the empire state building. This romance begins during the holiday season and ends with a formation of a new family.

8. This Christmas (2007)

This movie honestly reminds me of my late friend, Rodney Torain. He used to sing “This Christmas” by Chris Brown. This Christmas reminds us all about all the drama and antics that occur during a black family holiday. However, what overcomes everything is the love that we share.

9. The Best Man Holiday (2013)

Almost 15 years after their last reunion, these friends gather together again for the holidays. Though, there are plenty of hilarious moments, get your tissues ready because this movie is a true tear jerker.
